Life expectancy for a baby born in 1900 was only 47 years.
Only 1 in 100 would live to 90 years old, and a third would die before the age of 5. Infectious diseases, caused by germs and other bacteria, were the major health challenges. Scientists fought those diseases with better sanitation, vaccines and antibiotics that saved lives.
Now a typical newborn in the Western world is expected to live up to 80 years. Nearly all of us will suffer from one or more chronic diseases, including diabetes, obesity, heart disease, depression and anxiety. The causes for these diseases are not likely to be infections; instead, they relate directly to the bad lifestyle choices we make. And the medications we take only manage our symptoms; there are no assured medical cures for most of these diseases. The medications work best when combined with making better, healthier lifestyle choices.
The latest research is showing that best results are dependent not so much on the “what” of a heathier lifestyle, but on “when”. When you eat, when you sleep, when you train.
