We are programmed to maintain a 9-hour sleep pattern when we are babies and a 7-hour sleep pattern for the rest of our lives, yet the overall clock dampens with age and becomes less efficient. As we age, the internal drive to have consolidated sleep or wakefulness slowly breaks down, and we wake up more easily when disturbed by light or sound and have difficulty getting back to sleep. This is when nurturing a body clock with better habits becomes critical.
While many people think that changes to their sleep cycle are genetic, the chance of having that genetic mutation is remote at best.
