“You can motivate them.
You can direct their energies,
You can teach them, lead them and guide them.
But you can’t control them – and you would not want to if you could.”
Respect them. Respect their rights as employees and as human beings. Learn who they are and treat them as individuals.
1. Take responsibility. Being trusting and respectful doesn’t ley you off the hook; managers must manage. Harry Truman said it best: “The buck stops here.”
2. Be assertive. Seek results, not excuses or reasons. Be a strong presence. Make sure your “yes” means “yes” and your “no” means “no”.
3. Work with them, not on them. You’re in this thing together, and you share common goals. When they do well, you do well.
You can choose you attitude – if being a better leader means enough to you. Learn by doing, one trait at a time.
